Question by Paul B: I have a D link DIR615 N router. How can I set up NAS using this router and a western digital hard drive?
I have not bought the hard drive yet so I’m open to suggestions but how do you get NAS (network attached storage) working on a regular router that’s connected to a cable modem and feeding a windows machine with multiple users?

Answer by GoodToGo
The way a NAS works is just like a computer. You can think of it as a harddrive enclosure with RAID controller and a simple OS. If your router is running on DHCP which dynamically assign IP address to each device connects to it, then there is really not much more for you to setup for the NAS. Setting up access on a NAS will be a totally different issue as it depends on your NAS and the file system you will be on.
So here’s topology of your network structure:
cable modem — router — (NAS, PC1, PC2, PC_n)
On your Windows machines you will be able to share the files from your NAS but mapping it through the IP address of the NAS.

Question by Voce: I am new to raid controllers but would like to know how to perform this setup.?
I have a 64gb ssd that I would like for the os and drivers only and I have 2 x 1tb hhd’s that I would like mirror driven

In principle you would connect the 64GB SSD drive to a separate controller, and you would connect the two 1TB HDDs to the RAID controller. In the BIOS interface screen for the RAID controller you would add the two discs to a RAID 1 array (mirroring) and then initialize the drives.
In order to detect the SSD (if it requires any extra drivers) you may need to supply a driver disc during the OS installation, and you will undoubtedly need to supply drivers for the RAID controller so the OS can detect the RAID array.
Once done, you can format the RAID array to whatever file system you like. Personally, I’ve found that NTFS with the a cluster size of 4K seems to get a little slow (I run a RAID 1 array with two 2TB drives — as I’m using WinXP and the drive is a boot drive, I can’t make the cluster size any larger).
As your RAID array is not a boot disk, you can format it to whatever cluster size you like. A size of 64K would make the disc a little inefficient for storing many small files, but will make the number of clusters smaller and thus more manageable. If the interface for formatting the drive under the OS doesn’t provide the larger cluster size, consider going to the command-line interface and using the “format” command there.

It’ll be able to run most of the games out there. The processor is a good one, it’s got 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a good 7200RPM hard drive, and a decent graphics card.
My only concern would be price. Dell is likely ripping you off majorly on the RAM upgrade, whether they would be willing to admit it or not. You’ve got decent RAM in the laptop, but you can buy your memory in there for less than $ 60, so keep that in mind when customizing the laptop to 4GB.

Yeah I know it can’t use the other 1GB of RAM and it’d be cheaper to add it myself, but with Dell to get the 256MB 8600 GT, I have to get the 4GB included =/

Looks like a good machine to me.

If I were to own it, however, I would do my best to cover the “Dell” logo, ASAP. But, that’s just my opinion.

Answer by Jeff C
That motherboard won’t fit in that case. The motherboard is Mini-ITX and the case is ATX. The CD drive will fit in any case with a CD drive slot, which that one does. You should talk with someone that has built a computer before (not someone that claims to know how to build a computer) and get their help. There’s nothing worse than getting all your parts and realizing that they’re not compatible.

Thats a great laptop, but not cheap.
If all you are going to do is gaming, then you’ll be better off with a desktop that has the same specs or better for 1/3rd the price.
